Kids

One in five children will be abused or harmed in some way before they turn 18.

Kourageous Kids exists to change that.

Our K–3 classroom program equips young children with age-appropriate body safety knowledge using the evidence-based Monique Burr Foundation Child Safety Matters® curriculum — provided to Northern Colorado elementary schools so no child is left without the body safety education they deserve.

About Kourageous Kids

Through The Monique Burr Foundation Child Safety Matters program, students learn about safety, child abuse, and online dangers — presented in a way that is right for their age and designed to help kids feel safe, confident, and empowered to speak up when something is wrong. The program is grounded in the latest research and endorsed by national experts, and it’s designed so that parents and caregivers can continue the conversation at home.

What Your Child Will Learn

  • The difference between safe and unsafe situations, both in-person and online

  • How to recognize warning signs in interactions with adults and other children

  • Personal boundaries, the swimsuit rule, and the difference between safe and unsafe secrets

  • Who to contact and how when they feel unsafe

  • The MBF Five Safety Rules and how to use them

The MBF 5 Safety Rules

At the heart of Kourageous Kids are five rules that give children practical tools to help the adults in their lives keep them safe:

🔹 Know What’s Up — Stay aware of your surroundings and know your personal information, like your address, a guardian’s phone number, and your family password.

🔹 Spot Red Flags — Recognize warning signs of danger, online and offline — like adults or peers trying to trick or pressure you into something unsafe.

🔹 Make a Move — If you spot a red flag, get away and stay away.

🔹 Talk It Up — Use your voice. Report unsafe situations, say “no” with confidence, and go to a Safe Adult.

🔹 No Blame | No Shame — If you are ever hurt, it is never your fault. You should never be ashamed to tell someone.

Safe Adults & Family Safety Planning

Students are encouraged to identify two Safe Adults — one inside the home and one outside — they can turn to if they ever feel unsafe. Families are also encouraged to create a family password, teach children the correct names for their private body parts, and revisit what their child is learning after each lesson. The more these conversations happen at home, the more confident and prepared children become.
